Today is the start of "Juneteenth" commemorating the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. This was a very popular event for the African-American community in the deep south. My father got to experience it is a less than festive atmosphere. Prior to the start of the anticipated 1943 celebration in Beaumont, Texas, members of the KKK traveled to Beaumont to cause trouble and disrupt this event resulting in a race riot breaking out. In order to restore order soldiers from Camp Wallace were called in to restore order. My father related his experience as a soldier to help quell the riot, and can be found in chapter 8 of Limited Duty
