April 19, 1943 was the start of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The resistance fought valiantly for 27 days against the nazi's. What caused the Germans so much trouble in subduing the resistance fighters was the fact that a majority of the fighting took place in the sewers beneath the city. Tanks and other weaponized vehicles were completely useless. The sewers were a labyrinth of tunnels that provided the resistance an advantage as they knew how to navigate them in what was almost complete darkness. The other issue encountered by the Germans was the fact that the sewer tunnels did not afford a great deal of room. The average German soldier was forced to stoop because of the low ceiling which also hindered their ability to move quickly. Much of the resistance fighters who engaged the the Germans were children, the average age of eleven. Eventually Hitler issued the order to raze the city resulting in the eventual defeat and the death of 13,000 resistance fighters. The statue outside of Old Warsaw is the only reminder of these brave children. May they rest in peace.
